Agaie town is a
market centre where various kind of good and services can be found. (yams, sorghum, millet, rice, shea nuts, cotton, and peanuts
[groundnuts]). Swamp rice, an especially important cash crop south and west of
the town in the Niger’s floodplains, is cultivated both on small farms and at
the government’s irrigated rice project at Loguma, 20 miles (32 km) south. Area
737 square miles (1,909 square km). Pop. (2006) local government area, 65,209.
INDUSTRIAL AND
COMERCIAL POTENTIALS
Agaie local
government is a potential area for prospective investors with the available
mineral resources at Wanzaya, Nami, Guregi, Zago and baro hills. They are
capable of raising social economic status of niger State to an unpredictable
height. Available mineral resources include Columbite, Iron, Ore, Gold, Chalk
and Lime stone. Nami and Zago hills with their large formations of lime and
stone can sustain cement, chalk and white wash industries. Other mineral
deposit include: Koalin, clay and some traces of crude oil.
KPATANASARA: before
the colonial Era Kpatanasara which is one kilometer from Loguma existed as a
local port. Kpatanasara port was very vital for the movement of goods to and
from other part of the country.
It is located on
the banks of the river Niger and served as a huge source of revenue to the then
native authority and Agaie local government council.
BLACKSMITH: our
blacksmith workshop at twata-mukun is up
to date and noticeable not only by their products but the amazing embers of
burning charcoal as you get near it. Our blacksmith workshop is second to known
in times of quality items like hoes, cutlasses, knife, axes, bowl and arrows
etc.
ART AND CRAFT:
The Tswagaiechi
were rich and famous in the field of art and craft. No wonder the present Agaie
people are renowned for excellent wood work. Most of the art and crafts though
which Agaie Local Government has won medals at shows and exhibitions were made
by Egazhi i.e Local wood carvers commonly found at Emi Egbazhi Tako, Emi
Egbazhi Tiffin.
These local wood
carvers make excellent designs of seats, paddles, motar and pestle Ello
sculptures, canoes etc.
WEAVING:
EMIZHOGUNLUCHIZI at
Ekowuna Area are famous in mat, hat, and hand fan weaving. Beautiful mats for
newly wedded couples are always available. Weaving and knitting are also
prevalent. Our women indulge in weaving of kpasa (locally weaved textile) and
Duma Kasa i.e cardigan
Recently, Agaie
local government council renovated and equipped the Women/Youth Development
centre which serves as skills acquisition/Training and exhibition centre for
Agaie made products.
